Mr Dunn says the effects of binge drinking will put off new recruits |
Police forces will find it more difficult to recruit officers because of 24-hour drinking, according to the chairman of a police watchdog. Mark Dunn, chairman of Sussex Police Authority, said recruits will not want a career which primarily involves policing "violent binge drinkers".
Mr Dunn has written to Home Secretary Charles Clarke with his concerns.
Changes in licensing laws will allow some pubs to open 24 hours a day at the discretion of local councils.
Pub bouncers
Mr Dunn said that people want to join the force to make a difference and not because they want to "pick up human wreckage" left by binge drinkers.
He added: "Officers are expected to operate virtually as 'bouncers' for pubs and clubs.
"The answer does not lie in policing the effects of binge drinking, which is already an epidemic in towns and cities across the country, making no-go areas for decent people."
Mr Dunn said the government needs to look at other aspects of a "24-hour continental lifestyle" such as providing adequate public transport facilities and food outlets.
He suggested a debate is needed on how to stop the binge drinking culture and give local authorities the power to close "irresponsible" venues permanently.
