Bay water failure still a mystery
Water testing
Samples of bathing water from Viking Bay failed two tests in August
Four months after Broadstairs became the only beach in the South East to fail water quality tests, the cause of the pollution remains a mystery.

Residents raised concerns about water quality in Viking Bay at a public meeting on Monday but Southern Water told them the inquiry would continue.

In August, the bay's bathing water twice failed European standards.

Southern Water said it was looking into whether a surface water pipe was being contaminated by sewage.

'Very positive'

Richard Price, from Southern Water, said: "We're focusing on the surface water outfall which is supposed to carry rainwater that is run off from roads, patios or driveways.

"We believe that some sort of contamination is getting into the system."

Councillor Sandy Ezekiel, leader of Thanet council, described the meeting as very positive.

"It's hoped, and I must stress hoped, that we've found the possible contamination point."

He added that of 20 samples taken at Viking Bay, 12 were "excellent" and six rated as "good".

"We're all just extremely disappointed that two failed completely," said Mr Ezekiel.
