Future of air show 'under threat'
Red Arrows flying at an air show
Organisers fear the plans pose a threat to future air shows
Air shows at Biggin Hill Airport in Kent could be halted if permission to build a housing development on its boundary is granted, organisers fear.

An objection to the proposal has been lodged with Bromley Council by squadron leader Jock Maitland, who has organised more than 100 shows at the airport.

"A risk assessment is unlikely to support any form of display flying if this plan goes ahead", he said.

The council said the matter was due to be discussed at a meeting on Tuesday.

Simon Ames, spokesman for Air Display International, which organises air shows at Biggin Hill, also believes the homes would pose a threat.

"They would be in an area where, certainly during show time, aeroplanes are overhead and going through various manoeuvres," he said.

"An intensification of houses quite so close to the airport and on the display line is almost certain to bring air displays to a grinding halt."
