Bid to grow giant strawberries
The hybrid strawberries grow to about the size of a plum
A fruit farmer in Kent has been asked by a major supermarket chain to produce strawberries that are twice the size of normal ones.

The berries, which have been nicknamed "Scarletts" after the screen actress Scarlett Johansson, are already being supplied to Tesco by growers in Spain.

Tesco spokesman David Chamberlain said the berries "literally stop people in their tracks, like Scarlett Johansson".

The strawberries can be up to 57mm in circumference, or the size of a plum.

British conditions

The variety, called Honour, is a hybrid between two types of berry - one of which is known for its large size and the other for its sweetness.

They have been grown in southern Spain since 2003, but earlier this year Tesco asked its supplier in Kent to see whether plants could be grown here.

It had aimed make them available this summer but are waiting to determine how the fruit responds to British growing conditions.

It now hopes to make home-grown Honor strawberries available from next year.
