Residents in Kings Hill, West Malling, earn an average of �62,000 per year, compared with a national average of �29,374, research firm CACI said.

The area with lowest average wages of �12,000 per year was in Middlesbrough.

CACI spokesman John Ray said higher house prices led to more affluent people moving to Kings Hill and said it was "truly a pocket of wealth".

'A safe place'

Kings Hill beat areas in central London and the Home Counties in the Wealth of the Nation report.

The former World War II airfield now has houses valued at just under �1m which overlook their own golf course.

Resident Tim Dodd, whose business and home are in Kings Hill, said that the village's main attraction was that it was a safe place to live.

"I've always been reasonably ambitious and driven and I haven't deliberately aspired to live in the most expensive postcode.

"I would rather not have the size of mortgage I do, but unfortunately you have got to make your choice and then pay the price.

"For us, the choice was the environment that our children grew up in and so it is a price worth paying.

"If you stand anywhere for 10 minutes, you would see a security van or a community policeman - it is a safe place to live."
