Cash boost for new Medway campus
Medway university
The expanded campus will be used by at least four universities
Plans to expand the Universities at Medway have been given a boost after it emerged that nearly half of the 50m needed has now been secured.

The new "multiversity" in Kent, which was announced in March, will see student numbers rise to 6,000 by 2010.

It will also have a major impact on the area, creating about 600 new jobs.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has given 15m to the scheme, while the South East England Development Agency (Seeda) has donated a further 8.6m.

Expanded campus

The money will be used to convert the former drill hall and canteen, which are both listed buildings, into a learning resource centre, student facilities and teaching accommodation.

The scheme is a partnership between the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent, together with Mid-Kent College and Canterbury Christ Church University College.

The site is adjacent to the University of Greenwich's existing Medway campus.

The expanded campus will be used by at least four other universities.
