The 58 victims suffocated in a lorry carrying tomatoes |
A play about 58 Chinese migrants who were found dead in the back of a lorry in Dover, Kent is due to be premiered in Canterbury next week. The play, called 58, has been written by Philippe Cherbonnier, and is being staged by Asian theatre company, Yellow Earth, which is taking it on a UK tour.
The company said the show is "a tribute to the human condition".
Nine people were convicted for their part in the human smuggling tragedy, which took place in June 2000.
Fundraising event
The 54 men and four women who suffocated in the back of the sealed lorry containing tomatoes had been hiding in it in an attempt to enter Britain illegally.
Officials discovered the bodies at Dover's eastern docks on 18 June 2000.
There were two male survivors.
The play by the Yellow Earth theatre company tells the story of their struggle for a better life.
Views on immigration from the British public have been integrated into the play through video interviews.
The company is holding a fundraising benefit reception on the opening night of the performances in Dover, on 8 November, in aid of the families of the 58 victims.
