A massive regeneration scheme is planned for the town |
A second rally has been held in Dartford against plans to build a road through the centre of the town. The road, part of massive council regeneration plans, would go through Central Park and the Glentworth ex-servicemen's club.
Four hundred people turned out for an earlier demonstration - about 300 joined the protest on Saturday with a number of military vehicles.
Members of the club said they were determined to fight on.
Regeneration scheme
The club was built as a memorial to Viscount Glentworth and others killed in the service of their country.
Club secretary Terry Blundell said: "What they're proposing at the moment is 10-storey flats and this whacking great supermarket which is going to be open 24 hours a day.
"It seems ridiculous to me and I think it will kill the rest of the shops in Dartford.
"The club has been there for 84 years and it's got a long history and they just want to bulldoze it."
The council has said the road alignment and the use of the Glentworth Club lands would lead to larger playing field areas and a redesigned park with a promenade, cafes and pavilions.
The authority also says the regeneration scheme will bring customers and more retailers to the town and also provide quality town centre housing.
