Hospital clinicians say the equipment will improve scans |
A Kent hospital is pioneering a new ultrasound scanning system which is designed to improve the early detection of breast cancer. The Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham was unveiling the specialist equipment on Friday.
Doctors say the equipment, which cost over 80,000, will provide more accurate scans.
The ultrasound system allows clinicians to identify small lesions which were previously difficult to detect.
Rosemary Toye, clinical director for breast screening at Medway NHS Trust, said the new ultrasound offered "sharp resolution image quality".
"This is cutting edge technology," she said.
"It means that we can provide an improved service to patients with high quality examinations, offering better accuracy and consistency than ever before."
