Commuters protest over car park
Car park at Chatham station
Engineering works are forcing commuters to park in Chatham
Commuters in Chatham are protesting about the lack of parking spaces at their local railway station - even though they pay for a 330 permit.

Many motorists say there are not enough spaces and their cars are clamped if they park outside designated areas.

The car park is normally full by 0800 BST, with the problem being blamed on engineering works at the Strood Tunnel.

South Eastern Trains says commuters who would normally travel from Strood station are driving to Chatham instead.

Discounted parking

As a result, car parking spaces are over-subscribed, with commuters facing a 50 release fee if they park in a non-designated area.

South Eastern Trains says it has offered discounted parking at Strood station for the duration of the engineering works.

Rail season tickets have also been discounted for commuters travelling on the Strood route, but many do not want to use the replacement bus service, preferring instead to travel into London from Chatham.

The work on the nearby Strood Tunnel is set to continue until the end of the year.
