Thousands join recycling scheme

Increased recycling will reduce landfill waste, the council said
Five thousand residents are being given green-lidded wheeled bins as a recycling scheme expands in west Kent.

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council is to remove people's green waste and cardboard on alternate weeks to normal waste collections.

The council said black household waste bins would be collected one week and green bins and boxes on other weeks.

The service, due to expand on 6 September, has been running for four years in Larkfield and Ditton.

Calendars supplied

Areas joining the scheme include parts of West Malling, Offham, Ditton, Aylesford, Larkfield, Leybourne, Hadlow and Mereworth, the council said.

The council said the green-lidded bins were being supplied in addition to usual black-lidded bins - used for normal household waste.

The green bins are to be used for green waste and cardboard, while green boxes are also available for other recyclable material to be collected.

Boxes can be used for newspapers, magazines, telephone directories, junk mail, steel cans, aluminium tins and aerosol cans, the council said.

Cllr Owen Baldock, cabinet member for environmental services, said the service would dramatically reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill sites.

Residents will be given calendars, giving details of collections.
