'Brothel' beside cathedral probed

An investigation has begun into whether a brothel has been set up close to Canterbury Cathedral.

Police in Kent confirmed they were looking into the allegations concerning an address in King Street.

The property is 100m from the cathedral and residents nearby have reported suspicious activity and said a red light was illuminated at night.

A cathedral spokesman said they would not comment on whether it was an appropriate premises to be nearby.

Complaint made

A police spokesman said they were aware of allegations that the property was being used for prostitution.

He said: "We are invesigating (this address) and we will work with the landlord to try to sort this matter out."

The Canterbury Cathedral spokesman said: "We will not comment on whether this is an appropriate premises to be in the vicinty of the cathedral."

One resident living near the address said there had been strange comings and goings from the property.

And another neighbour said she had made a complaint to the letting agents but had not yet received a response.
