Molly Wells had life-saving surgery after her appendix burst |
A Kent mother has said her two-year-old daughter is lucky to be alive after a doctor misdiagnosed her appendicitis. Vicky Wells, from Swanscombe, claims the doctor said Molly was too young to have the condition.
The next day another doctor told Mrs Wells to take Molly to hospital where she had life-saving surgery after her appendix burst.
The area's Primary Care Trust said it had not received an official complaint from Mrs Wells so could not comment.
'Extremely lucky'
Mrs Wells said she felt dismissed by the first doctor.
"He said it was probably a stomach bug, just give her plenty of fluids and I said I was a bit concerned about appendicitis because I had it and the NHS direct service had mentioned it to me.
"He said she was too young to have appendicitis.
"[At the hospital] we were told it was extremely severe and we were lucky, extremely lucky, we got her in when we did."
The family said they have complained about the doctor who answered their call.
But the Dartford, Gravesham & Swanley Primary Care Trust (PCT) said it had not received a formal complaint.
In a statement it said the trust takes all complaints seriously and due to patient confidentiality could not comment on any individual case until a formal complaint was made.
Mrs Wells has been asked to put her complaint in writing to the PCT so it can resolve the issues.
