A call has been made for the best possible use to be made of Manston Airport in the debate over the future of aviation services in the South East. Thanet District Council said maximum use should be made out of the airport, near Ramsgate, over the next 30 years.
A revised consultation document was drawn up by the government which outlined proposals for the future of air travel.
Among the options are a new runway at Gatwick or Heathrow or the building of a new airport at Cliffe on the Hoo Peninsula.
Disappointment expressed
The first consultation was challenged in the High Court by Kent County Council and Medway Council because Gatwick was excluded form the plans.
In its response to the new consultation, Thanet Council again expressed its disappointment that Manston was not identified for a larger passenger and freight role.
The council also reaffirmed its opposition to the building of a new airport at Cliffe and that if a second "hub" is needed then Stansted is the best option for a new runway in the short term.
However it said in the longer term Gatwick should be expanded.
Councillor John Kirby, planning and transportation cabinet member, said: "The council is determined to see the maximum use being made of Manston, as this will help the development of the whole area."
Manston Airport is a former RAF airfield and specialises in cargo and freight flights as well as passenger services.
