Heavy rain causes flash flooding

Flash flooding affected many homes in East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire

Parts of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire have been hit by flash flooding after torrential rain.

Fire crews were called by dozens of worried residents on Thursday night. In Owston Ferry one home was flooded for the third time in four years.

Crews had to pump water from Moat House Road at Kirton in Lindsey near Scunthorpe.

Humberside Fire and Rescue said the floods disappeared as quickly as they had arrived.

Properties in Goole, Scunthorpe, Brigg and Gilberdyke were also threatened by the flash floods.

David Kennington, who lives on Station Road in Owston Ferry called for flood defences to protect properties in the village, after his home was damaged by the flooding for the third time in four years.

"It's getting beyond a joke, it's time something was really sorted out about this.

"My wife's ill and it doesn't help her one bit."

Humberside Fire and Rescue spokesman Don Woodcock said that crews had been kept busy during the flooding.

"We received over 90 calls about flooding during the evening.

"On most occasions it was a case of the flooding receding as quickly as it appeared.

"But we did have to deploy a number of pumps to prevent water entering a number of properties in some areas."

North Lincolnshire Council said they had staff working overnight to deal with the flooding.

About 2,000 sandbags were issued to people wanting to safeguard their homes or businesses.

The Park library in Scunthorpe was closed on Friday after flood waters seeped into the building.
