Plans for music festival scrapped

Keane were due to headline the two-day festival
Plans for a two-day music festival in Hull to celebrate the life and work of William Wilberforce have been scrapped.

The event, which was due to feature headline acts Keane and Groove Armada, was to be held in the city's East Park on 9 and 10 June.

Organisers Freewill Events had hoped to attract 50,000 people to the Freedom Rocks Festival.

The company denied reports on Monday that the event had been cancelled due to poor ticket sales.

News 'disappointing'

A spokeswoman said Freewill Events would not comment until all the acts involved in the event had been informed.

The company was due to release a statement later.

Hull City Council said it was "disappointed" by news of the cancellation.

A spokeswoman said: "Hull City Council's involvement was to provide the venue.

"This is obviously a loss to the Wilberforce 2007 programme of events but there are many other events as part of the programme."
