Pupils are offered semi-skimmed milk and fresh fruit juice
Children in the East Riding who eat school meals are being given free drinks of milk and fruit juice as part of a drive to encourage a healthy diet.

More than 100 schools have signed up for the initiative, introduced by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

The council said the drinks would boost pupils' vitamin C intake, build up resistance to cold and flu and provide calcium for healthy bones and teeth.

Parents will not have to pay extra for the drinks.

Children are offered fresh fruit juice three days a week and semi-skimmed milk on the other two days.

Sue Galvin, senior catering manager for the council, said: "The school meals team is continuously striving to improve school lunches and the healthy drink initiative is just one of many more to come.

"Introducing healthier options to children at an early stage will encourage them to eat a balanced diet throughout the rest of their lives."
