Union leaders have called for urgent talks with the new owner of Birds Eye in Hull amid fears over jobs.

The company is being sold by owners Unilever to Permira - a private equity company - as part of a 1.15bn deal.

Unilever said the Hessle Road site's 600 employees would be employed on current terms for the next three years.

After a staff briefing on Tuesday the GMB union said it wanted assurances that Permira, which owns the AA, would not make compulsory redundancies.

'Frank discussion'

GMB official John Wilson: "Our experience of Permira today is that they are asset-stripers and the plan they have announced to consolidate the sector translates into trade union language as job cuts.

"We are seeking an urgent meeting so that we can hold a frank discussion about the company's plans for the frozen food business."

The sale of Unilever's frozen food operations follows a strategic review of the business, with Unilever looking to concentrate on faster-growing sectors.

The deal, subject to regulatory approval and consultations with unions in the countries affected, is expected to conclude by the end of the year.
