Round-the-clock rescue rolled out
Highways Agency motorway patrol team with Alistair Darling
The officers will help keep motorway traffic flowing without delays
Highways Agency traffic officers have begun 24-hour patrols on more motorways after the successful launch of the service in West and South Yorkshire.

They are now working with Humberside Police in the east of the region to manage incidents on the M62, M18, M180 and M181.

They are supported by a control centre in Wakefield, which answers roadside telephones and sets up warning signs.

Patrols currently attend about 150 incidents a day in the region.

The service was launched on stretches of the M1, M62, M621, M606 and A1 last September.

Humberside Police Assistant Chief Constable Alan Leaver said: "We can now look forward to an improved efficiency of service to members of the public on the motorways in our region."
