Council lends its chief executive

The Audit Commission has criticised North East Lincolnshire Council
A council without a chief executive has turned to one of its neighbours for help.

Darryl Stephenson, the chief executive of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, is to take temporary charge at North East Lincolnshire Council.

This follows the early retirement of Jim Leivers from his post as the head of North East Lincolnshire.

Mr Stephenson will be in charge at the Grimsby-based authority until a new chief executive can be appointed.

It is thought this will take about four months.

'Family' member

A report from the Audit Commission in January described the performance of North East Lincolnshire Council as "weak".

On Monday, Darryl Stephenson said: "I have always believed in the local government 'family' and if a member is in trouble and you can help, you should.

"I am not under-estimating the task but I am looking forward to starting."

Keith Brookes, the leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, praised Mr Stephenson's record of achievement in the East Riding.

"This will enable him to effect the improvements that we know are necessary," he said.
