Police warning over scooter craze

Motorised scooters can reach speeds of up to 12mph
Police have warned children in an East Yorkshire village that a motorised scooters craze could end in tragedy.

Officers say the number of youngsters riding scooters on roads and pavements in Walkington is a problem which is likely to worsen during the holidays.

They also reminded parents that riding the machines in public without a licence, tax, insurance, lights and a helmet is illegal.

"We fear a child may soon be seriously hurt or worse," Humberside Police said.

"Many of the village roads run downhill onto the main street and children speeding down the roads could easily end up in front of a car.

"Elderly and infirm residents are also at risk of being knocked over by riders on the pavement, particularly as they may not see or hear the scooters heading towards them.

"Whilst we don't wish to spoil children's fun, we do want them to stay safe this summertime, as do their parents."
