World War Two veterans are being encouraged to sign up for lottery funding under the Heroes Return scheme. The multi-million pound project enables veterans to revisit battlefields where they lost comrades.
They will also be helped to record their experiences on the visits so future generations can learn from them.
All veterans who are UK residents and saw active service with, or alongside, British and Allied armed forces will be eligible for the funding.
Remembrance visits
Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council chairman Mary-Rose Hardy said: "I am very pleased that the New Opportunities Fund is making it possible for the men and women who fought in the war to pay their respects to former colleagues."
Veterans' spouses and carers can accompany them to areas such as France, north Africa and the Far East at any time in 2004 and 2005.
War widows and widowers are also eligible for remembrance visits funding.
The money is being provided by the Lottery's New Opportunities Fund in partnership with the Confederation of British Service and Ex-Service Organisations.
