Road works will take place during the village's Wesley celebrations |
Celebrations to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, in the village of Epworth are being hampered by building works. To stop 12 houses flooding, Seven Trent Water has closed the main road into the village - and there will be road works right through the festival.
But as this year's celebrations are expected to attract over 50,000 visitors from as far afield as Korea and the US, bringing over half a million pounds to the local economy, some people in the village are unhappy with the timing of the work.
The works are taking place on Station Road and West End, part of 2.6m of flood defence work being undertaken by Severn Trent Water.
Twelve houses in the area flood each year because of rising sewage water and the works aim to stop that happening.
Council leader Don Stuart who expressed anger at the roadwork's |
But the timing of the heavy work is critical because it is taking place in the middle of the town's celebrations. Don Stuart, the leader of North Lincolnshire Council said: "I'm very angry, I'm also very sorry for all the people of the village, and of course the people in the background who are putting a lot of hard work into one of the hits of the year."
Steve Hodgson of Severn Trent Water told BBC Look North: "We've got to do this work, we've been as open as we possibly can be.
"We understand it's frustrating and inconvenient for people whenever we close roads, we wouldn't do it unless we absolutely had to.
"We've said we'll do what we can to make sure there's as little inconvenience as possible, if we can get the road open at any point, we will."
