'Bed blocking' problem reduced
Nurse with patient
More hospital beds are now available for other patients
There has been a big reduction in "bed blocking" at the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby.

Action by community care workers means that fewer patients are having to spend time in hospital after their acute health needs have been met.

In 2002, an average of more than 30 patients were taking up beds which could have been used by other people needing treatment.

This has now been reduced to single figures in line with a target set by the government.

John Garrett, who is in charge of services for older people at North East Lincolnshire Council, said it has taken a lot of hard work.

"The effect of this success is that people are now leaving hospital quicker," he explained.

"Their social care needs are being met in more appropriate surroundings such as their own homes or in intermediate care homes."
