Tolls bring in an annual 18m |
A local business group is carrying out a survey to find out how Humber Bridge tolls impact on the local economy. More than six million vehicles cross the bridge every year bringing in approximately 18m.
But most of the cash generated by the tolls is swallowed up by debt repayments on the cost of the bridge's construction.
The Humber Forum will be questioning a cross section of bridge users to find out what impact the tolls have on their lives.
The group believes the bridge debt is restraining economic growth and claims the survey will be the first time the issue has been thoroughly addressed.
Previous studies have concentrated on the bridge's impact on the environment and transport.
By the time the Humber Bridge opened to traffic in 1981 loan charges had brought its total debt to 115m.
The Humber Bridge Board pay out 15m every year in repayments and its estimated the construction loan will be paid off in 2032.
