The lorry had been waiting to board a ferry at Calais |
Thirteen illegal immigrants were found hiding in a refrigerated lorry full of yogurt which had been heading for Worcestershire. UK Border Agency (UKBA) officers made the discovery during a search in Calais, France, on Monday. They said the 11 Eritreans, one Iraqi and one Somali had been in the Slovak-registered lorry, which had been waiting to board a ferry. The yogurt had been due to arrive to a distribution depot in Redditch. The immigrants were handed over to the French authorities. UKBA Director Tom Dowdall, who heads operations in northern France, said: "It's important we stop would-be illegal immigrants before they reach the UK. "That's why we've got hundreds of British immigration officers based at ports in France and Belgium."
