Scrum collapse rugby player dies

A 23-year-old rugby player left paralysed while playing the sport has died from his injuries.

Dan James, from Worcester, dislocated his spine when a scrum collapsed on him 18 months ago.

He was a former pupil at the Royal Grammar School in the city where he represented England in the under-16s rugby team.

A trust set up in his name after his accident has raised nearly �25,000 for spinal research.

Before his injury, Mr James had high hopes of following his father's footsteps by playing professionally.

Stuart James, director of rugby for Worcester Wanderers Colts, coached Mr James from the age of seven.

He paid tribute to him saying he was a committed player with tremendous talent.

"He was a natural and gifted rugby player and a great character," he said.

"It is a very rare accident. It's probably one of the reasons why it's so tragic.

"Dan will be remembered as being a totally committed rugby player with tremendous talent and just a thoroughly nice boy.

"I'm sure he'll never be forgotten."
