Flood barriers in a Worcestershire town would not have helped during the recent severe flooding, the head of the Environment Agency (EA) has said. Upton-upon-Severn was cut off during flooding over the summer.
"Even if we'd got them (barriers) up, they would have been overtopped by the sheer volume of the flood water," EA head Baroness Young said.
The Mayor of Upton, Tim Perry, said the issue of possibly installing permanent barriers should be looked at.

"Why the flood barriers didn't get there? We can argue it was extremely bad weather on that day," he said.
"I think we really need to start looking forward on this issue at the moment.
"They were a temporary flood barrier situation and I'm sure now we should look at maybe putting permanent barriers in - not only along the river front, which had a lot of damage, but also in New Street in Upton-upon-Severn."
He added that the Environment Agency had been looking at that as well.
