Post office closure plan dropped
Tesco store front
Tesco said size and layout were a problem.
Controversial plans to close the only post office in a Herefordshire town have been dropped.

The plan was part of proposals to convert the Homend branch, housed in the One Stop shop in Ledbury, into a Tesco Express.

But after a significant amount of public opposition, the supermarket chain pulled out of the project.

The One Stop, which is also owned by the same company as Tesco, will remain unchanged.

Public pressure

Plans to convert Ledbury's only post office proved to be extremely unpopular, prompting a campaign against the closure headed by the mayor.

Tesco initially planned to close the post office for a month during works, but bowed to public pressure and promised to supply a temporary service in the town.

However, the supermarket giants are now pulling all plans to convert the store.

A company spokesperson sited size and layout as being a problem.

More than 40 letters of objection against the Tesco Express were received by the council.
