Road still shut after fatal crash
Scene of the crash at Ashton corner on the A49
Diversions on the A49 remain in place on Tuesday
A major Herefordshire road remains closed following a fatal collision between two lorries.

Two people, one thought to be a local man, were killed in the crash involving a tanker and a security vehicle.

The incident, which caused an explosion, happened on the A49 at Ashton corner between Leominster and Ludlow, just after 1330 BST on Monday.

A police spokesman said the vehicles were still at the scene and the road would have to be resurfaced.

Investigations into the crash will continue on Tuesday and road diversions remain in place.

The crash caused an explosion and then a fire which spread to a nearby house.

The impact trapped the drivers
Divisional officer Ray Rogers
Fire crews from Bromyard, Leominster, Kingsland and Tenbury Wells attended the scene, while specialist crews were also brought in from Droitwich Spa and Malvern.

The contents of the milk tanker leaked into the water system and the fire service worked with the Environment Agency to try to minimise the damage.

Divisional officer Ray Rogers, of Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade, said: "It has been extremely challenging.

"The incident involved a milk tanker and a hydraulic unit.

"Upon impact there was a very severe fire. The impact trapped the drivers.

"There was a cottage adjacent to the main A49 which was engulfed in flames and there was severe damage done to that."

Mr Rogers said the owner of the cottage was not at home when the fire broke out.
