Hundreds of people headed to Dorset's beaches on Sunday despite the chilly weather to take part in the annual voluntary beach clean.

A total of 23 beaches along the World Heritage Site, from Lyme Regis to Poole, were "spring-cleaned".

Up to 1,000 people, including children, were expected to turn up to the county council-run event.

It is hoped all recyclable waste collected from Lyme Regis, Abbotsbury and Swanage beaches will be salvaged.

Both district councils for those areas supplied volunteers with special recycling bags.

'Never degrading'

They will then arrange for the collection and disposal of the recyclable waste after the beach clean has taken place.

Liza Cole, Dorset Countryside Ranger, said: "Marine litter is unsightly and a blight on Dorset's magnificent Jurassic Coast and nearly 40% is left by beach users.

"Plastics in the marine environment have many detrimental effects on wildlife, and cycle around the world in ocean currents, never degrading and so cause long-term damage."

Last year, 465 volunteers collected in excess of 779 sacks of rubbish, estimated at 62,000 items of rubbish.

  • The beaches included in the 2004 clean-up, which took place between 1000 BST and 1200 BST, were: Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, Eypesmouth, Burton Bradstock, Cogden Beach, West Bexington, Abbotsbury, Ferrybridge, Chesil Cove, Church Ope Cove, Bowleaze Cove, Ringstead Beach & Bay, Durdle Door, Kimmeridge, Chapmans Pool, Swanage Town Beach, Shell Bay Studland, Knoll Beach Studland, Whitley Lake, Lulworth Cove, Warbarrow Bay, Arish Mell & Mupe Bay.
