Motorbin leads anti-rubbish drive
Motorised dustbin
The huge dustbin was heading the council's anti-rubbish campaign
Passers-by in Oxford were surprised by a giant motorised dustbin driving down city centre streets at the weekend.

The four-metre tall bin, which can reach speeds of 15mph, was promoting an anti-rubbish day.

Oxfordshire County Council hopes the two-day event will encourage people to throw less away and so reduce landfill.

Shoppers got free reusable calico bags and trial home compost bins, while new parents were invited to enter a draw to win a pack of 10 eco-friendly nappies.

Katie Zabel, the council's waste reduction officer, said: "These shopping bags are designed to break the plastic carrier bag habit.

"Around 150 million plastic bags are used in the UK each week, yet they can take up to 500 years to decay in landfill.

"This type of calico bag easily rolls up in a pocket, ready for those last minute purchases."

As part of the weekend's events, Ms Zabel also showed shoppers how rubbish can be transformed into works of art.
