The service puts people making similar journeys in contact |
A free website to team up car users in an attempt to cut congestion, save money and protect the environment is being launched. The new service, where people register on-line to be matched with others making similar journeys, is a joint project between Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole councils.
The site is aimed at people making their way to work, doing the school run or going shopping.
But it is made clear that every member is responsible for his or her own safety.

Jo Walker, of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, says as long as people agree from the start about petrol costs and other areas, the idea is no more risky than getting in a taxi alone. She said: "Obviously it is a great idea if it works.
"We don't want to discourage people from doing things like this - we just suggest people listen to their instincts and check people's identification."
Dorset County Council transport planning assistant, Helen Jackson, said: "At one time or another, everyone shares their cars with friends and family without thinking about it.
"But there are times when a driver has empty seats in a car because they don't know anyone who needs a lift - that is where organised car-sharing comes in.
"The service puts people in contact with others travelling in the same direction or to a similar destination."
The website is being launched on 23 January.
