Both sets of fans were well behaved, say police |
The highly-charged south coast football derby between Southampton and Portsmouth has passed off peacefully with only three arrests, police say. Hampshire Police, who had over 400 officers on duty in and around Southampton's St Mary's stadium, said both sets of fans were well behaved.
Violence after the last game between the teams on 2 December saw 17 people arrested and led Hampshire's top police officer to call for calm before Sunday's fixture.
Southampton won the contest between the south coast rivals 3-0.
'Potential for disorder'
One person was arrested for on suspicion of drugs offences, one for breaching the peace and one for affray.
Chief Superintendent Paul Stickler, leading the operation, said: "This was the second of two matches to be played at St Mary's this month which had the potential for disorder.
"I am extremely pleased with the way the policing operation went for this match and with the behaviour of all the supporters.
"It was important to us to ensure that peace was maintained and that potential trouble-makers were not allowed to spoil the day for everyone at the match and shopping in the city centre."
