Global Challenge has been held in Southampton since 1992 |
Southampton has lost one of its premier yacht races to arch-rival Portsmouth. Organisers of the Global Challenge yacht race had talked with both south-coast cities to find the host for the next event.
The decision to move the prestigious event to Portsmouth is a bitter blow for Southampton which proclaims itself "the home of ocean sailing".
The race has started and finished in Southampton since it began in 1992.
'Toughest race'
It is thought the success of Portsmouth's new Gunwharf Quays development was crucial to the organisers' decision.
Much of Southampton's Ocean Village area has been demolished and turned into flats since the start of the last race.
The ten month race covers 32,000 miles, from Europe to the Americas to Australasia, from Africa back to Europe.
It is called the world's toughest yacht race because it goes the 'wrong way' around the world against the prevailing winds and currents.
