Asylum protesters confront minister
Beverley Hughes MP
Ms Hughes is soon expected to announce if plans will go ahead

Angry crowds have confronted a government minister on a visit to the site of a proposed new asylum centre in Hampshire.

Beverley Hughes toured HMS Daedalus for under an hour on Thursday before driving back to London.

Ms Hughes, Home Office minister for asylum and immigration, did not stop to talk to local protesters.

The government is expected to announce soon if it will to go ahead with plans to turn the former Royal Navy base into a temporary home for asylum seekers.

Protesters in Gosport
Thousands marched against the proposals earlier this year

The centre at Lee-on-Solent, near Gosport, would house up to 400 single men while they waited to find out if their requests to stay in the UK had been successful.

Last week local councillors met Home Office officials to discuss the plans.

Earlier, opponents handed over a 32,000-name petition against using the site.

As many as 8,000 people marched in protest at the proposals in February.
