1m drugs found in furniture

Customs officers have seized drugs worth an estimated 1m from a furniture warehouse in Dorset.

Around 300 kilos of herbal cannabis were found in boxes in a furniture depository close to Bournemouth Airport on Thursday.

Officers identified it as a shipment that had arrived in the U.K. from South Africa in January through Felixstowe docks and was still awaiting clearance and collection.

No arrests have been made, and customs officers say inquiries are continuing.

This was an excellent detection by one of the new Customs mobile teams
Bob Gaiger, customs spokesman

Customs Officers went to the depository on Thursday to carry out checks on import consignments there.

The consignment was described as 37 boxes of personal effects, but when examined by the officers, 30 of the boxes were found to contain herbal cannabis.

The other boxes contained furniture.

Customs spokesman Bob Gaiger said: "This was an excellent detection by one of the new Customs mobile teams. In line with the Government's drugs strategy, HM Customs & Excise's main priority relating to drugs is to reduce the availability of Class A drugs.

"We continue to uphold the law relating to other illegal drugs, including cannabis."
