Thousands have already turned out in protest at the plans |
The government's asylum policy is again under attack with pressure mounting over plans to open a centre for 400 refugees near Gosport, Hampshire. Councillors from Fareham are to meet officials from the Home Office to discuss the controversial plans for the former airbase at HMS Daedalus.
On Thursday, opponents handed over a 32,000-strong petition against proposals to use the site in Lee-on-the-Solent for asylum seekers.
They hoped the show of opposition on Tuesday would force the government to rethink its plans.
Under the scheme, HMS Daedalus would house up to 400 single men while they wait to find out if their requests to stay in the UK have been successful.
As many as 8,000 people recently marched in protest at the proposals.
Public consultation
Fareham Borough Council leader Sean Woodward demanded another meeting with the Home Office team in his battle to make sure his council is consulted.
The government has promised to hold public consultation over the plans for the former naval base.
Mr Woodward said: "I am pleased that the Home Office has at long last agreed to meet Fareham Borough Council to discuss this important issue.
"We will be meeting their delegation before the decision is effectively taken and I hope that, as well as meeting us to explain their proposals, they will also listen to our views."
Local residents opposed to the scheme are concerned the arrival of 400 single male asylum-seekers for periods of six weeks could increase crime in the area.
They also argue the area does not have the facilities to provide medical care for the asylum-seekers.
