Kibali will enjoy a bread birthday cake |
The oldest known okapi in the world is celebrating its 33rd birthday on Saturday. Marwell Zoological Park, near Winchester, Hampshire, has ordered a special birthday cake made of bread for Kibali.
Okapi, natives of dense African rainforests, are the only living relatives of the giraffe and were only discovered by scientists in the early 1900s.
They share some of the same features as giraffes, such as a very long tongue and short horns.
Kibali was born in captivity at Rotterdam Zoo but came to live at Marwell in 1995.
The park is the UK National Okapi Centre and is home to a group of six of the shy creatures.
The last oldest recorded okapi in the world lived in the United States and died aged 31.
