Campaigners fighting government plans to open an asylum centre near Gosport, Hampshire, have taken their battle to Downing Street. They handed over a 32,000-strong petition against proposals to use HMS Daedalus in Lee-on-the-Solent to house 400 male asylum-seekers.
They hoped the show of opposition on Tuesday would force the government to rethink its plans.
Council leaders have already met Home Office officials to ask them to reject the idea.
The government has promised to hold public consultation over the plans for the former naval base.
Under the scheme, HMS Daedalus would house up to 400 single men while they wait to find out if their requests to stay in the UK have been successful.
As many as 8,000 people recently marched in protest at the proposals.
