Redknapp police quiz 'formality'

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp was questioned by police investigating alleged corruption in English football as a "mere formality", the club said.

It is understood the former Portsmouth FC manager was questioned by City of London Police and tax investigators.

The ongoing inquiry has focused on several transfer deals at Portsmouth FC and at Birmingham City.

A spokesman for Spurs said: "It was a mere formality in respect of next stage information relating to a tax issue."

Both City of London Police and HM Revenue and Customs would not comment.

Last May, Redknapp and his wife were awarded £1,000 damages against the City of London Police after High Court judges held that officers who raided their home in Sandbanks, Dorset, as part of the inquiry were acting unlawfully.

Redknapp spoke at the time of his "bitter disappointment" at the way the arrest was handled, saying he believed he had only been arrested because he was a "high-profile" figure.

The police force said it accepted the judgement and had reviewed procedures but added it did not act maliciously.
