Odds on the Hawks winning were slashed from 100/1 to 50/1 after thousands of bets were placed on them.

Havant's FA Cup journey began against Bognor Regis in September and the Liverpool game was their eighth in the competition.

About 6,000 fans travelled to Anfield to cheer on the plumbers, plasterers and binmen.

Before the game, William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said: "This game has really caught the imagination of the public and, although everyone knows they haven't really got a chance of winning, everyone seems to want a small bet on them just in case.

"We have been taking non-stop bets all morning - from 10p a time to one of �250 and a dozen more three-figure bets.

"Bookies know Havant can't win, Liverpool know Havant can't win - but Havant and their fans don't seem to know that and, if they pull it off, bookies will be paying out up to �10m, the biggest payout ever on an FA Cup game."

He said one client had even staked �1,000 at odds of 50/1 that Havant would make it through to the next round.
