The 20,000-tonne warship has undergone a two-year upgrade

More than 1,500 guests joined the ship's 682 crew members for the event in Portsmouth Naval Base, which included a fly-past by RAF Tornados.

The 20,000-tonne warship has undergone a two-year upgrade and six months of sea trials to test its new equipment.

The refit enables her to carry Army Apache, RAF Chinook and the Navy's anti-submarine helicopters.

Speaking before the event, Ark Royal's commanding officer Captain Mike Mansergh said: "The rededication ceremony marks another significant milestone in the life of this famous ship.

"It will be a truly great day for everyone and I know that the ship's company will be looking forward to the event and its associated celebrations."
