The leaflet was designed to look like a parking ticket |
Campaigners have issued mock parking tickets to 4x4 car owners in Winchester in a bid to "drive them off the roads". The Hampshire Alliance Against Urban 4x4s called for an increase in road tax for the vehicles, which it claims are increasing global warming.
The group, which was launched at the event on Saturday, also wants to see a ban on advertising the cars.
A spokesman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said the cars are not as polluting as some others.
The campaigners issued tickets that looked like a genuine penalty charge notice, but actually detailed why they believe a large four-wheel-drive vehicle is a poor choice for urban areas.
Darren Shirley, spokesperson for the Hampshire Alliance Against Urban 4x4s, said: "It went extremely well.
"We communicated with a substantial amount of 4x4 drivers about the damage their vehicles are doing to the city of Winchester."
But Nigel Wonnacott, from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said: "There's a lot of nonsense pedalled about the 4x4 and I think there is a bit of a witch-hunt going on."
