Cathedral visitors charged entry
Winchester Cathedral
The cathedral hopes the movie will boost tourist numbers
People who visit Winchester Cathedral can now expect to pay 4 for the privilege because visitors are "giving less or not donating at all".

The charge comes into effect on 1 March, but those attending religious services will not pay an entrance fee.

The elderly will have a 50 pence discount, while regular visitors can buy a 12 annual cathedral pass.

The movie of bestseller The Da Vinci Code, starring Tom Hanks, was partly filmed at the cathedral last year.

Earlier this year, the Hampshire cathedral told BBC South it predicted "a deficit of more than 1m over the next five years".

The release of the film is set to attract more tourists to the city and the cathedral is expected to benefit from the interest it generates.

The novel, written by Dan Brown, has sold more than 17 million copies.
