Police dogs get a nose for cash

The dogs have been trained using shredded bank notes
Dogs specially trained to smell cash are being used by police to stop criminals moving large amounts of money through ports and airports.

Trainers from Hampshire police have used shredded bank notes to sensitise the dogs to the smell.

Detectives say the dogs will be used throughout the county, but mostly at Southampton docks and airport.

Dog trainer Mike Chapman said: "Even when cash is hidden away in luggage or on a person's body, the dogs find it."

So far two dogs, Zuka, a black labrador and Scooby, a Springer Spaniel, have completed their training and three more will also undergo training.

Mr Chapman said: "The ability to search for cash being brought in to and taken out of the country will be particularly useful when we are doing specialised operations at airports and at the docks, and will help disrupt and deter serious crime and terrorism."
