Mayor Edwina Cooke gave the freedom of the city to the crew |
The cruise liner Queen Mary 2 sounded its whistle on Monday to re-enact the role played by its predecessor in announcing the end of the war. The Cunard Line flagship's whistle was sounded from its berth at Southampton docks at midday.
The same action was undertaken by the Queen Mary on 15 August, 1945.
At the celebration, the ship's master, officers and crew received the Freedom of the City of Southampton from the mayor Edwina Cooke.
Cunard's previous flagship, the Queen Elizabeth 2, was also given the freedom of the city in 1990.
Carol Marlow, Cunard's European director, said: "We feel immensely privileged that the crews of both the company's liners have been granted Freedom of the City status."
