Gloucester and England rugby union player Lesley Vainikolo was arrested after allegedly being involved in a street fight in Bath on Saturday.

Vainikolo, 29, was held on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm after a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with head injuries.

The man was originally thought to be in a critical condition but has since been discharged.

The Tongan-born player has now been released on bail.

A Gloucester Rugby Club spokesman said: "We understand the police investigation is ongoing and have no comment to make at this stage."

The club confirmed that Vainikolo had been arrested and released on bail, but not charged.

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman added: "A man in his 20s was taken to hospital with injuries thought to be critical.

"Subsequently it was found they were not as serious as first thought and he was discharged."

The spokesman said there was "nothing to suggest" the injured man was a rugby player.

Vainikolo has won five England caps, after becoming eligible through his residency in the UK.
