Shops in a Gloucestershire town have signed up to a new scheme which aims to protect themselves against thieves. Each shop taking part in the scheme in Cinderford is issued with a radio so staff can talk to each other and the police about anything suspicious. "People were a bit nervous about using the radios at first but I think it will help prevent shoplifting," said Leila Ward, who is involved in the project. About 18 shops and the cinema have joined the initiative. Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Sean Clarke said the radios had proved popular during a trial held over Christmas. "If they have security concerns or suspicions they can share the information very quickly," he said. "Some shops such as the bakers open very early and others like the off-licence and newsagent are open very late and we have received feedback from staff that having the radios makes them feel a lot more secure at these times, particularly if they're on their own in the shop."
