Police offer text message service
text message
Police say the service is only for non-emergency incidents
Non-emergency messages can now be sent to Gloucestershire police by text message from a mobile phone.

Users will receive a text in return containing an incident number and confirmation that the message has been logged with the emergency service.

Those using the service will be charged at their network's standard rate for texts, but users are required to register first to avoid hoax messages.

The new text system is in addition to Mini-Com and BT-type talk.

A police spokesman said the system, for non-emergency incidents only, will be monitored in the constabulary control room.

"We have worked in partnership with the Deaf Association, the NHS and Social Services and we have taken on board their expectations to develop an appropriate system.

"The force will be using feedback from users once the system is fully running and will analyse the results to help enhance it," he said.

Leaflets describing how to sign-up for the service are available from audiology centres, GP surgeries, the Gloucestershire Deaf Association and police help points.
